The APPDE held a joint Satellite Symposium with the Occupational Therapists’ Network as part of the European Parkinson’s Disease Association’s 5th Multi-disciplinary Conference.
Speakers in the Occupational Therapy section addressed the need for an Occupational Therapy Network; the nature of Occupational Therapy for Parkinson’s disease in the UK; provided an overview of Occupational Therapy practice in Europe; and presented strategies, which can be used by all members of the multidisciplinary team, to make life with Parkinson’s disease easier.
Physiotherapy speakers examined the theoretical evidence for physiotherapy in Parkinson’s disease; a model for physiotherapy intervention in Parkinson’s disease; and how to link research results into evidence based, everyday practice. Members of the Rescue project team, who are investigating cueing as a rehabilitation strategy in Parkinson’s disease, led a practical workshop on cueing for professionals and people with Parkinson’s disease and their carers. Participants were able to experiment with a novel cueing device being developed within the project, and experience the effect of different cue types and frequencies on walking under a variety of conditions.
