As an important step towards evidence-based physiotherapy in Parkinson’s disease, in 2004, the Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy (KNGF) published the guideline Parkinson’s disease.
For this guideline, practice recommendations were developed according to international standards: based on the results of a systematic literature review, supplemented with clinical expertise and patient values. Trying to support optimal care for all Parkinson patients, the guideline was made available for free in Dutch and English (www.kngf.nl).
Today, this guideline is still the only one in its field. Moreover, in 2008, an external quality evaluation of all Parkinson guidelines available worldwide showed that only this guideline and the U.K. NICE guidelines are of (very) good quality. As a consequence, international interest in the guideline is high, and many European countries have now started its implementation, supported by the APPDE.
In 2010, the KNGF has provided a grant for the update of the guideline. This update is being carried in collaboration with 18 European physiotherapy associations. This will result in a European guideline, available in 2012.
Through the APPDE website you can stay up-to-date about the development process and about possibilities to get involved. For additional questions please get in contact with the project leaders.
